A STRESS-FREE MOVING EXPERIENCE!
Making the decision to move to an assisted living or memory care community is a big lifestyle change for many seniors. While moving can be a long and a sometimes stressful process, we’ve compiled some tips to keep it as seamless as possible.
CREATE A PLAN
Once you’ve established a move-in date, work backward to set dates for individual goals. Start packing rooms and items that aren’t used much – like guest rooms or rarely used kitchen appliances. Leave out the essentials you use regularly but pack, donate, or toss the rest. As you get closer to your move-in date, start packing up the things that are more essential.
Set smart goals for yourself that are easily attainable. Be specific in your goal setting like, “I will pack the basement on ____ date.” These deadlines make sure you will complete each task on time or even ahead of schedule. Make sure you are in communication with your Dominion Senior Living team, to meet any paperwork deadlines as well!
GET RID OF THINGS
Chances are you are probably downsizing from a home into an apartment-sized space, so it’s important to scale back possessions. Only keep things that have sentimental value to you and look to donate, sell, or throw other items away. If something is too large to take but has personal meaning to you, look to give it to another family member who would appreciate its value. Another suggestion is to repurpose it for you to take with you. For example, instead of taking a whole set of china plates, keep one and put it in a memory box.
Moving should not be done alone, it’s much too big of a job to be tackled by yourself. Look to gather support from family, friends, or by hiring professionals. Using friends and family is a great opportunity to reminisce about the memories tied to each item and to spend additional quality time with each other. However, hiring movers provides the most stress-free move with as little physical activity as possible. It’s the perfect solution if you are in a time crunch!
